So with recovery, naturally comes binge watching Netflix for countless amounts of hours and episodes. My latest binge? Sex and The City. It was perfect for recovery. It was cute, sweet and also hilarious. Days later from my binging watching I’m sitting in my local coffee shop thinking about a quote our most loved character, Carrie Bradshaw says early on in the series. She says, “I realized I just entered an interesting chapter in my life, I had outgrown the boys of my past and not quite grown into the men of my future”. I shifted in my seat a little bit when I heard that through my laptop. Was I in the same spot as Carrie, in our beloved season 2 of binge watching?
Breaking it down, Carrie’s first line of her incredibly accurate quote, “I realized I just entered an interesting chapter in my life, I had outgrown the boys of my past….”. When I think of the ghost of boyfriend and fling past I don’t see my husband in that category. It’s like they are there for temptation. Temptation during lonely nights and temptation I lean towards when I am feeling a bit lost, but in the end, I think that is the only reason they are there. For temptation to open up doors of our past and for realizing that I have outgrown them. I know better, I know these past relationships didn’t reach the end goal for a reason and that is why they are considered “outgrown” I wasn’t ready to turn back time and go down memory lane, been there, done that. Wiping my hands clean and saying goodbye.
Continue breaking it down, Carries second line of her quote states, “...and not quite grown into the men of my future”. The accuracy of this is embarrassing. As Katie is always telling me, If you look at my ghost from boyfriends/flings past you see a pattern. A lot of these boys were boys I had to chase. Boys that tended to put me on their back-burner. Boys themselves, that still had a lot of growing up to do. Now this isn’t going to turn into a “lets bash our exes” post because, I’m young, they were young and we all still had a great amount of growing up to do. I had a pattern of choosing the boys that were not the nicest over the boys who were and that's where this quote just fits like a glove in my life. If you want someone nice you can’t pick a project because you cannot change a man, and you shouldn’t. It took hours of binging my TV, and many snacks and one Carrie Bradshaw quote for me to realize my current “in-between” state. It’s crazy that one fictional character can make you hear something you have been telling yourself quietly in your mind for such a long time.
Saying goodbye to the definition “playboys” and hello to possibility of being with someone that's just as crazy for me as I am for them. Girls, I get it the chase is fun, the idea of a boy changing all of their playboy ways for you is a thrill to think about but realistically it's not fair. These men are the way they are for a reason. Don’t find a guy to fix, find a man to love fiercely, just as the way they are.
